Week 7

The Glorious Flight (our base book)

Supplemental Reads:

  • Goodbye, Mr. Lindbergh is based on a true story about Charles Lindbergh landing in a field in Canton, MS, and a little boy meeting him and spending the day with him. The author interviewed the boy, now an 80-something year old man, to write this story!
  • The Airplane Alphabet Book by Pallotta & Stillwell
  • First Flight by George Shea
  • Roman Numerals by Arthur Geisert. The illustrations are really cute. The "main characters" are pigs which are used to teach the different numerals. Then the practice pages show a scene with several things in it and the written part will list things like: X pig houses, III tractors, IV water tanks, V cows, XI evergreen trees, IX storage bins, up to XVI gopher holes, VL pigs, and MMMMDCCCLXIV Pigs! It explains how the roman numerals work in very easy-to-understand language; I highly recommend this book! [Nathan loved this book, it got checked out two weeks in a row...very cute book and Nathan took right to reading the Roman Numerals]
  • The Return of Freddy Legrand by Jon Agee
  • Flight (the journey of Charles Lindbergh) by Robert Burleigh
  • Eyewitness Juniors- Amazing Flying Machines by Robin Kerrod
  • The Wright Brothers (How they Invented the Airplane) by Russell Freedman
  • Fly: A Brief History of Flight illustrated by Barry Moser. Nice overview of flying from the Montgolfier balloon to the space shuttle.
  • Everybody Laughed and Laughed, by Jane and Ross Land, is a great book on how people thought Copernicus, Columbus, Pasteur, and (voila!) the Wright Brothers were all nuts for what they were trying. Each little vignette ends... "They watched ___________ and laughed and laughed. 'Of course,' they said, 'these men are daft!'"
  • The Paper Airplane book by Seymour Simon.
  • Roman Numerals by David A. Adler is a wonderful book.
[our library didn't have a few of these titles, so I subbed with another on Ameila Earhart and the DK Eyewitness Book on Flight Machines]
